This 8 year old girl presented with signs consistent with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), but there was no formal diagnosis at the time. She was non-verbal and initially displayed a range of challenging behaviours, including difficulty remaining seated, frequent visits to the toilet due to anxiety and regular episodes of spitting.

The tutor quickly identified that the pupil’s primary interest and strongest motivator was her tablet. This was integrated into a structured reward system to encourage engagement. Visual supports were introduced, including a Now/Next board and a visual timetable, to provide clear expectations and reduce anxiety around transitions. A visual timer was also used to help her anticipate the length of each activity.
To build initial cooperation, sessions began with very short work intervals—such as one minute of focused activity—followed by a longer reward period, typically ten minutes of tablet time. This structured, predictable approach helped establish routine, increase engagement, and lay the foundation for gradually extending her ability to participate in learning tasks.
- Within six months, consistent encouragement and carefully tailored activities supported her continued progress
- She learned to count to 100 and add and subtract numbers to 20 and made substantial progress in Literacy also
- Toilet visits were limited to one visit per 2 hour teaching session
"Watching this girl grow, flourish and begin to believe in herself has been one of the most fulfilling experiences in my teaching career. Her hard work and courage have truly paid off. I’m honoured to have been part of her journey."
